I understand why “The power of stories” is a very seductive and popular theme for people whose job is to write stories but honestly we need more stories extolling things like “the power of comprehensive workplace safety laws”
What I think: The ancestors of modern humans and dogs have a shared history going back at least tens of thousands of years. Our ancestors discovered ways to communicate and form mutualistic partnerships with a completely different species, a relationship facilitated by similar family structures. We have lived with dogs since before developing large-scale agriculture and cities. They shaped our cultures and our societies. Dogs are symbolically tied to death and the afterlife in various cultures, developed independently of each other, because humans thought so highly of their loyalty that we entrusted them as our guardians even in death. Even as society has modernized and dogs’ old roles become obsolete, new roles are developed and they still have a place in society today. One of the purest things in the world, to me, is when you make eye contact with a dog and their whole body lights up with joy. When dogs are happy, their bodies can’t even contain it all and they lose the ability to stay still because they just HAVE to share it. And despite all our flaws and shortcomings, they love us unconditionally.
Clearing out my phone of conference photos - here’s another photo of Fiona for y'all. She looks like she’s coming to greet her spectators, but really, there was lettuce.
@patchesthegreat: yes, I did tell her you loved her.
